Lazah is a young woman from Embizweni Square in Port Elizabeth. She loses her mother at the tender age of seven and it is her mother's dying wish that she takes care of her siblings. At their mother, Gladys's deathbed it was Lazah and her younger sister, Sihle, who was four. Gladys asks them whether they know that she loves them and what they would say if she were to die. As young children, they are confused and sad. Their family is torn apart as after her mother's hospitalization, both Sihle and her youngest sister, Cwayita fall ill and are taken by their aunts - Xholiswa and Kholiswa. The only time Lazah realizes her mother has passed on is on the day she is laid to rest. She lives with her grandmother, who also passes away, necessitating Lazah also to move in with her aunt Kholiswa. This is where she meets the dog Lion, forging a therapeutic relationship with him as she battles deep emotional scars and sadness.
