In our busy, modern lives, neighbors often don't know one another. In the novel, THE NEIGHBORS, folks live next door to one another without knowing each other's names. An older couplem, Abby and Vic believe they value their quietness and solitude. Abby is annoyed when the boy two houses from them takes out his frustration by hitting a tennis ball against the outside wall of the next door neighbor's house. Their opinion of him is low until a chain of events begin to unfold. The annoying boy takes a liking to them and helps the elderly husband shovel snow. He begins to call them Grandma and Grandpa in replacement of the grandparents who show no interest in him.
The young woman next door helps Vic unload groceries when Abby returns from shopping and is too ill to manage the task..Romance blossoms between the young woman and another neighbor. It becomes a cascading effect during the Christmas holidays until the residents of the cul-de-sac not only know one another, but are more like family than they are like neighbors.
