This is a mystery novel that tells the story of a young lawyer, Aaron Rodd, who is approached by a young woman seeking his help with a delicate and secretive matter. However, when Aaron is visited by the mysterious Harvey Grimm, it soon becomes obvious that they have a common history. Aaron Rodd is offered a partnership in a new venture by his old friend Harvey Grimm. The venture involves engaging in schemes that lead to an enlargement of their income, with the business name "Harvey Grimm and Rodd, Traffickers in Fate, Dealers in Adventures". However, Aaron is hesitant and reluctant to leave his law practice and considers himself to be a person with a conscience, who cannot engage in crooked dealings. During their conversation, they are joined by a man named Brodie, who is known as "the sleuthhound of Europe." Thus, Aaron is drawn into a web of intrigue involving stolen diamonds, a gang of criminals, and a series of mysterious deaths. As he investigates, he finds himself in danger and must use all his intelligence and cunning to solve the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. The novel is set in London in the early 20th century and explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the corrupting influence of money.
