Novel focuses primarily on Sowagerie's earlier life and upbringing around Bluff and concludes with the "Posey War" near Blanding. Additional significant characters include Poke, Toorah, Big-Mouth Mike, Pahneab, and other Paiute Indians and the Navajo Indians Tsabekiss and Bitseel.
