In August 1965 the Watts neighborhood of south central Los Angeles erupted in violence after a 21-year-old black man was stopped for drunken driving. Crowds gathered, officers called for backup. In the next six days property destruction was rampant and rioting continued day and night. Nearly $200,000 million in damages was accrued. The National Guard was called out by Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty and Police Chief William Parker. My e-book looks at the arrest of Marquette Frye and how it was pivotal to the ensuing destruction.
