Thirteen year-old Jami Caldwell and her six-year-old sister, Tami, were orphaned in a house fire. They are taken to a foster family which moves them to Maine, but when Jami begins running away, the State of Maine intervenes and splits up the two sisters. Tami is on her way to a family who wants to adopt her, but Jami has a different fate. Time and again she runs away from her foster homes until her aunt and uncle, learn about Jami and take her in. They accept Jami unconditionally. Then it becomes obvious that the migraines Jami have been suffering are only a symptom of a much more serious problem.... Will her new family keep her now that she is seriously sick, and will she be able to reunite with her sister before it's too late?
