The German sailing ship Admiral Karpfanger was named for a seaman who went down with his ship in the Bay of Biscay in 1683. Built in Belgium, the ship was once known as L'Avenir. Later it was taken over by the Hamburg-American Line. The ship was filled with trainees, teenage boys who sought to become seaman. Many were between ages 14-17. A four-mast ship, it went missing in March 1938. Remains of Admiral Karpfanger were discovered near Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of South America.
