"David Michaels is the son of the world-renowned sculptor, Adrian Michaels, and Elena Stefanova, a Russian post-impressionist artist with an international reputation. David is also a sculptor, with a devoted following for those dark and disturbing visions that redefine three-dimensional space into demonic architectural forms. David decides to set his promising career on hold to open a Gallery - Dark Visions - that will introduce aspiring artists to the New York City art world.
Janet Olivera-Guitierrez serves as general manager for Dark Visions Gallery, and as David’s mistress – a satisfying relationship of convenience for both of them, and one overlooked by Janet’s husband, Gustavo. Janet has secured three of the most promising young artists in the city, including the ephemeral Vincenti. David and Janet need one additional artist to balance out the thematic elements, techniques and styles – Jacqueline Maurer.
Jacqueline Maurer is the daughter of Jacques Maurer, a French sculptor of international repute, and the sworn enemy of Adrian Michaels – their feud long-standing, its inception known only to Elena Stefanova. Jacques has lost a lucrative commission to build a monumental sculpture for the Hilton, under construction in Dubai, to Adrian Michaels. Morose, Jacques pleads with his daughter to come home to Paris and join him in his studio.
Jacqueline is an MFA student at the University of Pennsylvania and the paramour of Tom Holbein, her swimming coach as an undergraduate, and now her best friend and occasional lover. Tom loves Jacqueline, but he has demons, and an age difference, that box his emotions, making him unwilling to commit.
Janet visits with Jacqueline to extend the offer to show at the opening of Dark Visions Gallery. Startled that David Michaels, son of her father’s adversary and competitor, is the owner of the Gallery, Jacqueline regretfully refuses the offer. David goes ballistic at the news and vows to find a way to rectify the situation. His solution – enroll in the MFA program as David Stefanov and attempt to insinuate himself into Jacqueline’s good graces. To do that, David must volunteer as a nude model in the advanced oils class in exchange for opportunities to participate as a student.
The Muses conspire to weave a web of mutual admiration and budding attraction, only to have Jacqueline pull back – unsure about her relationship with Tom. Romance intervenes as Jacqueline captures David’s dark essence on canvas; but after he reveals his true identity, Jacqueline casts him away. Laughing, the Muses also thrust Janet adrift as her husband decides he would rather have his mistress with their two children than the elegant and suave woman who has kept him company for fifteen years.
Tom and Janet have a chance encounter near Columbia University – sparks fly and the die cast to bring the drama to center stage. Tom convinces Jacques to come to NYC to visit with Elena, who willingly assumes playwright and directorial duties for the dramedy unfolding. Jacques convinces his daughter to show at the Gallery, Tom convinces Janet that he is the man of her dreams, and David coaxes Jacqueline’s vision out of stubborn marble and bronze.
On opening night, Adrian and Jacques bury the hatchet, leaving a swath of testosterone on the Gallery’s wood floor. David fails to show, but an understanding Elena and Janet send Jacqueline to his studio. Romance smiles as David’s creation, The Raging Bull, pulls free of its confines.
