This is the true story of Tom Genualdi, who served as an engineman's mate during the early 1950's in the U.S. Navy on a Landing Ship, Utility (LSU). We follow his time in the service from 1951 to 1955.

He goes from basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, then to his vessel in Little Creek, Virginia. We follow him to Engineering School, where he learns his trade, then on his journeys to the Caribbean and across the Atlantic to a deployment in the Mediterranean.

Along the way, he gets to see the inside of the luxury liner S.S. United States as she was being built, and also describes his vessel as he served on her, and his duties.
