I'll Have a Blue, Blue Christmas is a follow-on story to the novel Deep Blue. In Deep Blue, Brandt - our hero - is gifted, or cursed, depending on your perspective, with the Blues. These aren't your average, every day blues. Brandt becomes a conduit for the pain and suffering of the world, all that has gone before, all that is happening now. He has to play. The pain builds up inside, and the music is his release. He helps maintain the balance. He got this gift from a man he only knows as Old Wally, a black man with a harmonica he met in an alley filled with the homeless. Wally helps Brandt and his crew through the worst dangers of the novel Deep Blue, but we never really visit where he came from.
