With Excel's data validation tools, you can control how users input data into workbooks and ensure data is entered consistently and accurately. You can control the dates, the times, even the length of the text they enter, or simply provide a list of acceptable choices to eliminate any possible mistakes. Here, Denzell Tudor explores how the data validation tools in Excel 2013 can be used to set dropdown lists, and control numeric data, dates and times, and text data.

Topics include:

  • Testing for whole numbers and decimals

  • Using the input message box

  • Sequencing and placing lists

  • Creating multi-tiered lists

  • Setting date and time limitations

  • Limiting text length

  • Locating data validation rules

  • Requiring entries to be unique

If you need your data to be accurate, and you want to enter it quickly, then this is the right course for you. We will show you how to limit the types of numbers you can enter. How to set up error and warning messages. And how to set up drop down lists as a way to ensure valid data entry and save a lot of typing effort. We will also show you methods for controlling the entry of date and time information as well as limiting the length of text entries.

The skills acquired from this version are mostly applicable to newer versions of Excel.

The concept of spreadsheeting has been around for hundreds of years. The process can be described as the ability to arrange numbers, characters and other objects into rows and columns. It is most common that spreadsheets only contain numbers and text. The software version of spreadsheeting basically takes the manual processes described above and puts them into an electronic format. Whilst the accounting industry which most commonly uses spreadsheets they can be used in any situation.
