Lewis Spence's 'The Popol Vuh: The Mythic and Heroic Sagas of the Kichés of Central America' is an important text that provides an insight into the mythology and history of the Kiché people of Central America, as well as their religious beliefs and gods. Although the original Kiché text has not been adequately translated, this work uses translations by Scherzer, Brasseur de Bourbourg, and Ximenes to provide a detailed exploration of the myths and legends contained within. These stories are a blend of mythology and history, and are of great comparative value when studied alongside the mythology of the Nahuatlacâ or Mexican peoples. Spence argues that it is crucial for these stories to be preserved, not just as a record of the past, but to help inform our understanding of the future.
