Investigators Kiera Hunt and Aldis Morgenna have made their home in Las Vegas. The year is 2204; their four-year old daughter, Sofie, classified as a genius at age two with an IQ of 165, is busy making AI robotic pets for friends and family in a small workshop next to her parents' home office. Barney the Beagle is her first creation and gift to Aldis. Others soon follow.

Aldis and Kiera are awakened early one morning with the news that their close friend, retired LVPD detective, Frank Hanley, has been viciously beaten, stabbed numerous times, and left for dead in an alley. As investigative consultants to the Las Vegas Police Department, they ask the captain in charge if they can join the team to find Frank's assailants.

While Frank is in an induced coma, hovering near death, Lydia, his spouse, gives Aldis and Kiera his client list and they begin background checks on all twenty of them; they find a number of suspicious characters, all linked in some way to Dominick Salgado, a former partner of crime boss Sal Marino, now hiding out in the Cayman Islands to avoid charges of attempted murder.

As Frank recuperates from his ghastly wounds, Aldis and Kiera work hard to narrow the suspect list, but not without putting themselves in danger as they close in on the perpetrators.
