Ed Gein's ex-girlfriend was interviewed following the arrest of the man who killed and mutilated a female tavern operator in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Gein began robbing graves and collecting skulls around 1947. He continued to do so during the next five years. Former girlfriend Adeline Watkins recalled him as a kind and generous person. However, there was a secret side to his personality. Reclusive, he was a talented handyman and sometimes babysitter. When authorities entered his home they found skulls and body parts of women. It was evident that he'd skinned his victims much like a hunter dresses a deer.
