How we handle finances is God's test for true spiritual blessing. Our faithfulness in the area of finances is what readies us to receive the genuine, rich inheritance that God has promised to those who serve and follow faithfully. It's a critical area, because without passing the test of finances, we can never become all that God has intended for us to be. We can never receive the depth and the richness of the blessing of the Lord in this life without walking in obedience. He's waiting for His people to break forth into radical obedience so that He can radically demonstrate His love and power.
In Breaking the Spirit of Poverty, we are urged to live in radical obedience, to live under the Lordship of Jesus in every area. Bill Johnson challenges us to:

  • Release the tithe to God—it belongs to Him. If we withhold it, we become a legal target of the devourer and the devourer never knows when to stop short at taking and devouring 10%.
  • Confess God's ownership over our lives—all the gifts, abilities, everything we have belongs to Him. We prove our faithfulness day after day in the way we give oversight to that which belongs to another.
  • Cultivate a heart of respect and submission for God's chosen leadership. We are to show honor in our words and actions to those in authority over us.
  • Demonstrate a zeal for God's house. The tithe is to be a testimony of our love for the house of God and for those God has raised up to serve.
  • Move in radical generosity. It's the evidence of God's life in us. It's our declaration to the enemy that we trust God, that our security is in investing and expanding the Kingdom of God.
  • Enlarge our vision beyond ourselves so that we respond to people with compassion and love, declaring God's blessing on their lives. We are to seek to bring peace, prosperity, divine health, and wholeness to our communities. We are to demonstrate to the world what the King is like.
  • "God intends to bring people into the Kingdom through blessing." His desire is to pour out love, grace, and blessing on people. He invites us to a lifestyle of radical obedience and radical generosity so that we cooperate with Him in breaking the spirit of poverty over our lives and our communities.
