A Profaci family soldier, Aurelius Cirillo was murdered during a hotel tryst with his married girlfriend. The incident occurred some two years after the start of a gang war between the Profacis and the Gallo brothers. Friction had begun when "Crazy Joe" Gallo began to enter the lucrative jukebox racket. The door was opened to Gallo in the weeks after the notorious Apalachin meeting of November 14, 1957. Carmine Lombardozzi visited the Gallo family restaurant in Brooklyn. He quickly approved the Gallos entrance. On August 20, 1961 Cirillo was the driver of a Cadillac that transported the attempted assassins of Larry Gallo from a Brooklyn night club.
