Franco Viviani's new e-book illustrates the cave of Sumpang bita, discovered by chance in Indonesia during a speleo-anthropological expedition that took place some decades ago. On its walls, manual imprints and depictions of animals were found. A few years ago, it was discovered that the Karst of Maros, where it is located, contains cavities with wall representations among the oldest in the world. This served as a reason for the author to take stock of the origin of art, starting from the origins.
It offers to explorers and spelunkers who come across similar caves, some hints to identify, evaluate, understand and correctly report primordial artistic manifestations. It also suggests how to approach this human heritage with an eye as free as possible from prejudices, based on recent anthropological and cognitive information.
