At one time the Scrub Jay aka Florida Jay and California Jay ranged throughout the western United States and Florida. The birds' habitat has been greatly endangered by the eradication of scrub oak land which they rely on for their livelihood. Particularly in Florida and California the encroachment of condominiums and citrus growing farms has impeded the scrub jays' existence. Mosquito sprays that contain pesticides are a chief enemy. Scrub jays are particularly sedentary birds. Especially in Florida they seldom venture more than two miles from where they hatch.
