The story of the first Christmas begins with a young lady called Mary who lived in a town called Nazareth. Mary was a devoutly-religious young woman. And for Christians she was one of the most special people in history.

Christians believe that one day God sent an angel called Gabriel to speak to Mary. Mary was frightened! But the angel told her to not worry, for he had exciting news. God had chosen her to be the mother of His son. By the power of the Holy Spirit Mary would bear a child. She was to name the child Jesus, which means 'the Lord saves'. God had plans for the child to become a great leader and Mary's job was to love and nurture him. After she was told this, Mary humbly accepted the important duty God had given to her.
