Mickey Jelke was a 22-year-old playboy who was arrested in Manhattan for forced prostitution and living off the earnings of prostitutes. The scion of an oleomargarine fortune, he was originally from Lake Forest, Illinois. his father sold the family business to Lever Brothers (now Unilever) in 1948. When the young Jelke turned twenty-five he was due to inherit millions as his share of the family fortune. In 1953 and 1955 Jelke was tried in separate trials New York City.
