In 1977, Mania Fishel Kroll, a Polish child survivor of the Holocaust living in Toronto, hires a woman to clean her home. Mania comes to believe that, through an almost unbelievable coincidence, the woman might be the Nazi SS guard who saved her life by giving her food and special care in the Reichenbach labor camp, where she was imprisoned during the latter days of World War II. The guard had even offered to adopt her after the war. The older woman denies everything. Mania is stunned. Twenty-five years pass.

It is 2002. Mania returns to Poland to recreate her nightmarish experiences in Reichenbach. She hopes to shed new light on her fading memories. It is a difficult trip as she lost her entire family the holocaust, but she is heartened by the fact that she will meet again the woman she suspects was the guard in Reichenbach. She plans to elicit the truth from her. Or what she believes is the truth.

Her journey winds through her past back to and unimaginable world where two people once shared a little humanity. And where one woman was able to give a devastated child the one thing she desperately needed. Hope.
