Rainer Maria von Rilke (1875-1926) is considered as one of the greatest poets in the German language (but he was born in Prague, like Kafka) and also a transitional bridge between classicism and modernism. Among his most celebrated works are the "Letters to a young poet". This is a manifesto of what poetry is, written in a language of unbelievable lyrism. The "Duin elegies" , so called because they were written at the Duin Castle when Rilke was a guest of the Countess Maria Thurn, and they are works with a tragical sense of life and great depth.
