This book is a collection of short meditations, written from a Christian perspective, which are aimed at assisting the reader to put an end to their personal suffering through a better understanding of the workings of their inner life.
Simply stated the ego, and its accompanying thought patterns, is the root of all mental and emotional suffering. The working definition of this book is that the ego is like a false identity that has slowly built up within us from childhood, composed of the interpretations we have given to past events and the residual pain that has accumulated within us through unresolved past hurts. Gradually our interpretations and our unresolved pain consolidate into an ego-identity within us that has its own beliefs and emotions. These beliefs and emotions take on a 'voice' in our heads which becomes so persistent and dominant that it overshadows our true God-given identity (in much the same way as the clouds block out the rays of the Sun on an overcast day). Jesus taught us that if we are to truly live the life God intended we must first deny our ego-self but, in order to deny our ego-self, we must first identity it within us.
This book gives some helpful insights into how we can become aware of our ego and deny it. The wonderful result is that when the overcast clouds of ego are swept aside, our spirit then naturally rises to the dominant position God intended and our lives take on the peaceful flow of a Spirit led life.
