The Transcendent Taxi Cab is both a linear story as well as a collection of stories by one taxi driver about his fares and incidents that both he and other taxi drivers experienced. Everything takes place in Salem, Oregon, during the first decade of the 21st century, before Uber, Lyft, computer dispatching and mandatory GPS use. Every story and incident is real, but in some cases the names were changed to protect the innocent. The book evolved as it developed and changed from being a personal journal of the author about his experiences and those of other drivers to the inclusion of fictional characters, by the second half of the book that are part of the real experience. The original idea of the book was to create a spiritual journal by a religion journalist who came to realize that dedicated taxi cab drivers perform a ministry that is more nitty-gritty than that which most church minister's experience. This is a record of that experience for a one year period beginning on Friday, December 11, 2009 and ending one year and Ninety-Seven chapters later on Wednesday, December 22, 2010.
