My mom says there were a few mornings when they found her on the floor. There's a bathroom barely five steps away from her bed, and apparently, she kept waking up in the middle of the night, needing to use it. But every time she tried to make those five short steps, she fell. And no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't get back up.
I go quiet suddenly because I hear a shuddering sob.
"I'm sorry," I say, thinking my story has upset her.
"No, it's fine," she says. "Sometimes people can't get back up."
