David and Courtney had different motives for visiting the Bay Area.. For her it was a last-ditch effort to communicate some financial realities to her husband and save their marriage. For him it was to celebrate the New Year in the usual opulent style, made possible by her success as a hedge fund manager. He was also aware that she was on another "marriage revival" kick. Whenever that happened, he'd learned to placate her until she gave up. However, when she failed to return from a shopping trip, he was left with the two undesirable, yet equally plausible explanations. He wasn't sure if he should be angry with her for leaving or terrified by what could have happened to her. In time, one thing became impeccably clear; he failed her and his children and had to make amends.
