The citizens of Bean Village and Corn Village have been separated for many years due to a long-standing feud. They no longer share their bean and corn crops, but Noboru, a boy from Corn Village, finds a bean plant floating in a creek and talks his grandmother into growing it. This is against the law, and when people from both villages find out about it, they hold a meeting to decide what to do. In the end, they leave it to Noboru to come up with a solution. He decides that they should end the feud and share their crops with each other. The two villages do just that and live side by side in harmony.
