Free-living amoebae (FLA) are abundant in our environment. However the significance of their existence and roles have not been revealed fairly since there are only a handful of researchers especially in Malaysia work on these small creatures. Therefore, they are the most understudied microbes as compared with bacteria, viruses and microfungi. In their natural habitats, these FLA including Acanthamoeba act mainly as bacterial consumers, but some of them can become pathogenic, infecting humans and animals. In the present study, the existence and the importance of FLA particularly Acanthamoeba spp were elucidated and revealed by a research team working on FLA at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia.
