Michael and the Multicoloured Gospel is a semi-autobiography of the author and centres around the protagonist, Michael Farril, who discovers early in his life that he is gay.

Michael is brought up in a Protestant Christian home and told that the Bible is the infallible Word of God. But he discovers that the Bible speaks disparagingly about his homosexuality. He meets different people with different religious backgrounds who all claim the Bible as the basis of their beliefs. However, their beliefs differ dramatically, sometimes in contradiction to what Michael is taught to believe, which leads him to question the Bible's infallibility.

In the end, Michael discovers that the Bible writers in fact used the writings of an earlier historical figure who was gay to develop the Christian faith. This leads Michael to finally accept his sexuality and adjust his faith accordingly.
