Something strange is happening in the Scottish Highlands. Villages are going dark and quiet. Livestock are dying in the fields. A dead zone is spreading across the northeast of Scotland, draining the energy from every living thing it absorbs.

At the center of the dead zone an alien artIfact is discovered, shrouded in a darkness no light can penetrate. Blind Army veteran John MacGregor leaves Glasgow to guide a team of specialists into the dark mystery, hoping to find and reason with the artefact's creators before time runs out.

Inside the abyss, survival becomes the main priority when chaos and fear overcomes the team. Driven by panic, fighting breaks out, ending in murder and mayhem. MacGregor fights for his life, whilst trying to find a way out of the deadly, dark, prison.

MacGregor emerges to find a post-apocalyptic world where the human race has been extinguished. Joining forces with no-nonsense psychologist Eilidh Hunter, MacGregor explores the desolate and unforgiving wasteland.

Hunter and MacGregor soon find the first of many survivors, but the people they encounter have been changed into cruel and deadly imitations of their former selves...
