Excerpt - Virginia and her husband were never good together -
Slater sat on the sofa with a cigar in his hand, the silky fabric of his dressing gown cool against his skin.
He felt like a young man again as he grew hard at the thought of his wife sashaying around the kitchen in
next to nothing. A satisfied smile crossed his face.
Virginia returned from the kitchen and began to kiss her husband's cheek. Suddenly, Slater's skin felt
moist and cool. Tiny beads of sweat formed about his forehead and top lip. "Are you okay?" she asked,
concern filling her voice as his skin became ashen.
"I just want you to know something. I didn't kill Rebecca." His lips took on a blue tint as he spoke, his
breathing labored as his heart began to give out.
"Slater, what are you talking about?" She shook her head as she frantically dug through her purse for her
cell phone and dialed 911.
"You think I killed my wife? What you saw was me covering," he panted, struggling to breathe. "Just
leave it at that, and remember I did what I had to."
Right then, it all stopped. All the years of fighting, and all the horrible lies, were now over. Slater had
stopped breathing, and Virginia had stopped fighting.
