This is the first study that explicitly positions Voltaire in relation to the French Academy. The volume provides the reader with a history of the Institution, an explanation of Voltaire's reasons for wanting to belong to the Academy, his polemical role in the Academy, his academic activity, an account of the Academy's view of Voltaire at the time of his death, as well as its defense of his posthumous memory.
