Through a critical study of the early works of Maurice Barrès, Gordon Shenton examines the author's public appeal and the complex linkage between Self –as unique reality– and World in Barrès's work. Taking a traditional approach, Shenton proceeds in his analysis via an exposition of the themes and literary forms employed by Barrès.
