Why? follows a young Geordie mining couple, Robbie and Laura who move from up north when the colliery closes, and they are relocated to the Midlands where they can continue in more prosperous mines. After Laura gives birth to their first child Danielle, Robbie is heartbroken to find that she has been sleeping with his best friend, Billy.

Danielle grows up in a lonely and detached environment with an alcoholic mother and an abusive step-father. Laura leads Danielle to believe that her father is dead, but the secrets soon begin to unravel and Danielle is left with nobody to turn to.

The story follows Danielle's emotional state as she battles to find love and comfort at home. Nearly broken by the revelations of her home life, her mother makes a shocking allegation against her and she flees the home – into the unknown. Danger could be waiting around the corner, and Danielle needs to escape, fast.

Author Glynis Baxter lives in Mansfield and has spent a lot of time working as a support worker for Mencap. Glynis hopes that this story can be used as an educational tool and as an aid for group discussion, as it covers the harsh reality in mental and emotional abuse. Glynis has also worked within Mental Health and Challenging Behaviour, becoming the company's Dignity Champion – promoting respect, dignity and privacy.
