The Cats of the Butterwick Sands is a children's book following the various adventures of cats in a small run down seaside town called Butterwick Sands, a place that has seen better days; the hero being one special cat named Percy. He is a very clever and dignified cat and he is at the centre of all the adventures, stories and intrigues that the cats and other animals have. The other cats within the book are strays from across England and beyond – they come together to restore the funfair and caravan park, breathing life back into Butterwick and thus ensuring its survival.

Author Gabriella Thomas lives in Brixton, London but was born and raised in Reading in Berkshire. Gabriella has also lived in Aberystwyth in Wales, and it was there, amongst the sea and mountains that she decided to write the book. The inspiration to write the book came from her two grandchildren, Mariella and Elliot. Gabriella grew up in small villages where she often felt quite lonely, so she found herself giving voices to the cats and other animals and imagined what the world would be like if they could talk. Latterly, when reading stories to her grandchildren, Gabriella saw how much they all loved the voices as well.

Gabriella has worked in Nursing in the NHS for over twenty-five years, and currently works as full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist, working with children and families. Gabriella is also a qualified Psychiatric Nurse and has gained diplomas in Family Therapy from the Institute of Psychiatry and in Psychotherapy from the Tavistock Centre in London. The characters within the book are a reflection of people that Gabriella has met or known over the years; the animals all reflecting the quirks and nuances of the human condition.
