Eighty percent of those who earn a living from these crafts are employed by painting and decorating contractors. Many of the rest serve as independent subcontractors to the builder of new homes, apartments and office buildings. Such independent contractors may also concentrate on repair, alteration and modernization projects, or perform routine scheduled maintenance for large hotels and office complexes. Routine maintenance is also required at schools and other large public buildings, manufacturing plants, and even shipyards.
