"书刊印刷工艺设计" 是一门交叉课程， 由书刊印刷和工艺设计相互融合、渗透而产生。其次， 理论与实践并重， 其中很多专业名词、概念具有较强的理论性， 同时它又是产生于实践并主要用来指导实践。第三， 它是一门既古老又年轻的课程， 说它古老， 因为我国的印刷历史可以追溯到距今１０００ 多年前的唐代雕版印刷， 我国的设计历史可以追溯到距今１７０ 万年前原始人类对石器等物品的设计。但同时这门课程又很年轻， 将书刊印刷与工艺设计相结合， 并从理论角度详细研究、概括、总结， 最后将它精炼成一门课程， 时间并不长。另外， 它还是一门还在不断成长、进步的课程， 随着书刊印刷技术、工艺设计、美学等学科的不断发展及设备的更新换代，这门课程涵盖的内容与学术框架会不断丰富， 内容和方法也将不断更新、完善。("Process Design of Book Printing" is an interdisciplinary course that consists of the integration and interpenetration of book printing and process design.Besides, it focuses on both theories and practices.
