An elderly man, Scoop Parsons, is working on his farm, trying to remove an old stump, the only remains of an ancient pecan tree.
As Scoop tries to pull the stump out of the ground with his tractor, he reflects on a lifetime of memories spent on the farm, many of them centered on and around the pecan tree.
Some of Scoop's memories are happy, some are sad, and many are bittersweet.
But those memories have roots, like the pecan tree. Those memories are spread out, like the old pecan tree's leaves and branches, over a lifetime.
Read T. Whitman Bilderback's short story, "The Pecan Tree", and you just might find yourself reflecting on your roots, too.
