If someone is a failure and he is also mentally ill, it is tempting to blame his failure on his mental illness. But that is never the right explanation. If somebody is legitimately good at something—if he is success-bound at that thing—then his doing that thing will be a respite from his psychopathologies. It will be a safe space for him.
