Using a controversial new test, Tennessee state authorities target and arrest Shines, even if their powers have not yet manifested. They go after Lola, a newlywed military codebreaker—and her husband is shot during her arrest. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Lola is sentenced to "rehabilitation" along with Shinal, a Gold Medal Olympic gymnast, and Frenchie, a hairdresser with an attitude. Stripped of their freedom and sentenced to a government camp for brainwashing, torture, and experimentation, the three Shines must find a way to escape before it's too late.
