This is a historical novel exploring the mystery of the disappearance of the Ming Emperor Jianwen Zhu Yunwen. In the history of imperial China there is no other emperor that disappears, leaving no trace. This disappearace becomes a millennium-old enigma. The author burrows in historical documents for many years and finally solves the mystery. The novel begins when Emperor Jianwen is a teenager, and ends with his recluse life in Sanqing Mountain. The book as 23 chapters in 3 sections. The first section describes the fight for the throne between Zhu Di and Zhu Runwen; the second section discloses Emperor Jianwen’s experience when he joins the Taoist and Buddhist community; the third section decodes the secretes of his seclusion in Sanqing Mountain, service as a Taoist abbot and construction of a mausoleum in a Taoist monastery in old age. The book features fluid language, suspense, plot twists and the Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian atmosphere. He was enthroned in the 31st year of Hongwu and soon began taking back territory and power from his uncle princes, which enraged Prince to Yan to start the Jingnan Campaign. On the 13th day of the 6th lunar month of the 4th year of Jianwen, Prince of Yan broke open the Jinchuan Gate and captured the imperial capital Nanjing. Jianwen Emperor set the imperial palace on fire in despair. There are many versions of his whereabouts. The official history insists that he died in burning; unofficial history holds that he escaped and became a monk. History is always written by the victor. Emperor Jianwen’s death of burning is obviously a lie, as he only lost the capital and remained in control of the throne and the country. There was hardly any reason that he should burn himself. In fact he fled Nanjing with a group of trusted ministers. From Zhu Di’s usurpation to the years of Tianshun under Emperor Yingzong Zhu Qizhen’s reign, Empeor Jianwen vanished into the unknown world. He spent his last days in reclusion. His fraught relationship with Zhu Di jeopardized his life in exile. How did he managed to fled Nanjing? Who was secretly protecting him outside Nanjing? How did his escape the deadly pursuit? Where did he hide in the remaining decades? Where were his empress and two sons? How did he create riddles of his background by inscribing on the rocks when hiding himself in Sanqing Mountain? The novel offers detailed description and revelation of these mysteries.
