Here’s just a taste of what you’ll see in this useful summary:

“Ruth is a sensitive and studious African American. Ruth’s mother has been serving Sam Hallowell and his family since before the birth of her sister. Sam Hallowell has been the background voice on TV for a long time. Rachel, Ruth’s older sister, and Ruth were born poor and their father left them before Ruth’s birth. Since Ruth is lighter than Rachel in skin tone, she has always been given favors and priority over her older sister. Rachel changed her name to Adisa when she grew up and embraced her African American roots more than Ruth.

One day, when Rachel and Ruth have accompanied their mother to the Hallowell place at West Seventy-fourth Street during a storm, Ms. Mina, Sam Hallowell’s wife, gives one month premature birth to Louis, a son. Since the paramedics have not arrived by the time of the birth, their mother helps Ms. Mina with childbirth. Ruth witnessed a miracle during childbirth when she and Christina, Sam and Mina’s daughter and her friend, held hands and Ms. Mina and her mother also held hands and all differences in skin color, socioeconomic status and schooling vanished. Ruth called it a miracle for this reason because it entailed equality for all present and just women helping other women. Ruth dedicated 39 years to wait for that miracle to happen again. Further, the impact of Louis’ birth on Christina was to use a surrogate to give birth to her child, Rachel to have five babies and Ruth to become a labor and delivery nurse.”
