The Colombo crime family is one of five major Mafia families in New York City. The youngest of the syndicate organizations in NYC the Colombos evolved during the breakup of the old Joe Profaci family. Profaci controlled an organization of his own following the conclusion of the Castellammarese War that ended in 1931. In 1971 the Colombos were faced with the attempted assassination of their leader Joseph Colombo Sr. He was critically wounded before the beginning of Italian-American Unity Rally in Manhattan. Mafia observers suspected the Gallo brothers, Joey and Albert, and "Carmine the Snake" Persico as possible perps.
