Our Common Future, produced in 1987 by a United Nations commission, responded to a growing number of environmental concerns faced by the global community. Recognizing the need for long-term strategies to manage natural resources, the report argues we must collaborate to protect the environment, while at the same time stimulating economic and social development. These goals can be summarized as 'sustainable development,' defined as humanity's ability 'to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."' Brundtland argues that human development and the environment are deeply linked and have to be looked at together.
