The Newbie's Guide to the Sugar-Free Diet

Diets are quite controversial and the type of diet you choose to undergo depends on the type of lifestyle you lead. No single diet works for everyone; the efficacy of a diet may be outstanding for one person but detrimental for you. The important thing is to find out which types of food are best and worst for you. If you're thinking of undergoing a sugar-free diet, there are some things you should first understand.

What are Sugars? Sugar content is now a serious consideration when planning one's diet. Carbohydrates, as sugar is known scientifically, are the primary energy source of the body. Only when carbohydrates are used up will other energy sources, such as fats or proteins, get metabolized by the body. If not used up, excess carbohydrates are converted to fat.

The carbohydrate issue is quite contentious. Many say that carbohydrates are essential for optimal brain function and should account for at least half of one's calorie intake. Others blame it for increased levels of obesity, diabetes, and cancer around the world. In truth, carbohydrates are quite important and also quite dangerous, but not in such extreme cases as these ideas suggest.

There is nothing wrong with carbohydrates per se. Many populations in the world, such as some in Asia and Scandinavia, lived very healthy lifestyles even if they used a high carbohydrate diet. However, when modern food and refined carbohydrates were introduced, these people started getting sick.
