Starman isn't happy. He can't twinkle. The best he can manage is a dull shine. Starman slides down Mr. Moon's moonbeam to earth, hoping to find an answer to his problem.

When Starman meets the Friends of the Deep Forest Moon and hears they have a Wizard, he's sure the Wizard can make his star twinkle. But Wizard says it is beyond his powers. He tells Starman, "It's something that comes from the heart."

A disappointed Starman joins the Friends in their plans to decorate the tallest tree in Moontown for Christmas Eve. When Hattie Hippo accidentally steps on Tessie Toucan's wing and breaks it, the Friends are all sad. Tessie is the only one of them who can fly up and down and string the hundreds of lights on the tree. Now the magic of Christmas won't happen this year for the people of Moontown. Starman could only think of how very disappointed the Moontown children would be and he suddenly realizes he can string the lights, for he can jump almost as high as the moon!

Christmas morning dawns with a wondrous surprise for the Friends and the people of Moontown. Not only is the tree shining with lights from top to bottom, but perched at the very top and shining brightly enough to light the whole forest is Starman! Wizard told the Friends that Starman had learned the secret--the power to twinkle and shine comes from helping others.
