Peebles is Alabama born, but Brazil bound. He has farmed for forty years in Brazil, growing coffee and raising pigs for Prosciutto. The US South and his Brazilian farm, Várzea da Onça, located in the Northeast of Brazil, both have distinctive voices, accents, and rhythms. Both places value dogs, brooms, bacon, and cemeteries. Both places understand the fragility of man and the land he inhabits. Due to their resilience and the radiant transcendence of the human spirit both places have endured and survived drought, poverty, hatred and discrimination. Nature can be cruel and surprising, as can the cultural history of man on this earth. Farming is not for the faint of heart, and it is only through the transformative power of caring, that the land, the place, the people are made holy and filled with grace and beauty. These places of tender hearts and strong spirits, informs the character of these poems.
