Doctor John Summers intends to find out. John Summers, a Naval Doctor in the far future, has grown up in a society defended by artificially created beings, simply called 'Defenders'. They see themselves as noble warriors, defending humanity against outside threats, and against itself. John sees them as slaves, created and brainwashed by a government that cares little about them. Yet, how can one free the slave who does not wish to be freed?
