本书以《乐府诗集》的成书为研究对象，从编纂背景，资料来源两方面对这一课题作了深入的研究。全书分为上下两编，上编以《乐府诗集》编纂背景为主要研究及论述对象，主要论述了郭茂倩的生平家世、《乐府诗集》在南宋的流传以及《乐府诗集》编纂的文献背景及音乐理论背景。下编以《乐府诗集》的资料来源为研究对象，主要论述了郭茂倩编纂《乐府诗集》时，如何利用作家别集、《文选》、《古今乐录》等文献的情况。论文的结论部分在总结全文的基础上，初步探讨了《乐府诗集》的编纂体例及其分类。认为郭茂倩对乐府诗的分类是立足于材料的分类，这是本论(This book takes finished Collection of Yuefu Poetry as research object and makes further study for this theme from a perspective of compilation background and source.
