"Sense and Sensibility" is the first published work of Jane Austen and appeared in 1811 under the abstract pseudonym "A Lady". Set in southwest England, London and Kent between 1792 and 1797, "Sense and Sensibility" tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who experience love, romance and heartbreak. While the one sister is down-to-earth and sensible the other one is strongly romantic and sensitive. The novel deals with the question if sense or sensibility should triumph when it comes to make a successful match. "Sense and Sensibility" is still one of the best-loved and essential classics in English literature. Like AustenĀ“s other novels it retains a fascination for modern readers, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes.
